Gas Scooter Used – Buying A Scooter

Gas powered scooters are a great way to get back and forth around town.  But what is even better is a means to save money by purchasing a used gas scooter.  Used gas scooters are just as efficient as a new gas scooter.  But there are things you should look for when purchasing a moped scooter.

On average if a used scooter is taken care of and scooter parts were replaced when needed, the scooter can last indefinitely.  But if it has not been taken care of buying a gas scooter used could be a nightmare in disguise.  Just like a vehicle scooter parts wear out and need to be replaced.  Things like tires, brake parts, bearings, and light bulbs, transmission and engines are the key areas any consumer should look to when evaluating a used scooter.  Some parts are not that major.  Parts like light bulbs and tires are easy fixes and should not stop anyone from purchasing.  But engine problems and transmission problems are definitely places were a red light should go off.

Stay away from China built scooters.  These scooters tend not to last as long as Japanese built scooters.  The quality is just not there.  Remember you get what you pay for.

Checking the engine - First off trying to find out how old is the scooter and the engine.  Ask the owner about service records and how often the oil was changed.  A 2 stroke scooter engine should have its oil checked  weekly.  You are checking for the oil level and making sure that is stays within acceptable standards.  On average, two-stroke engines will use about 1 litre per 1,000 kilometres.  If you find that the owner has not kept to this schedule and the oil is low when you check it then you may not want to purchase that scooter.  Unless, you have not problem replacing a engine.  A 4 stroke scooter engine should have its oil levels checked every month.  Four stroke engines aren't as notorious at burning oil as the two stroke scooter engines.

Now that your tests have cleared the scooter motor now it is time to move onto the transmission.  In order to test you will need to take the scooter on a test ride.  On a manual transmission scooter shift up and down as you ride.  Does the transmission clutch slip, meaning come out of gear?  If so, the scooter need another transmission.  Negotiate a price accordingly or just walk away from the sale.

The last test of your motorized scooter would be to test the lights.  This is not a major test, unless you notice that a light is out and even if you replace the light it still does not come on.  This may point to an electrical problem.  Wiring issues may cost some money.

Don't be ashamed to buy a gas scooter used.  You can really find some great deals and save significant money doing so.
